HAUL OF MEDALS FOR LOCAL PADDLERS

Fourteen Coffs Coast members were part of the 15,500 participants from over 40 countries competing in the 11th Pan Pacific Masters Games held at Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast last week. The team collectively brought home a haul of medals which they say are too numerous to list.

Twelve of the members Coffs Coast Club members  teamed up with paddlers from Ballina, Grafton and Camden Haven to compete under the Far North Coast banner winning in three different age categories in the 500 metres, 200 metres races and a 4.8 km Round the Island race.

While the two other members were part of the Motley Crew Mid North Coast team along with paddlers from Port Macquarie, Nambucca, Kempsey, Taree, Forster and the Hunter winning Gold in their Seniors 60 plus categories. One member, Caz Williams, also won Gold medals in the Cancer Survivors’ category in both the 500 and 200 metre races.

The Gold Coast turned on perfect weather for the nine day event which celebrates masters in sport. More than 15,500 participants from over 40 countries converged on Varsity Lakes to compete in 40 varied sports in what has become the world’s biggest biennial Masters Games. Pan Pacs is currently on par in terms of participation levels with some of the biggest sporting occasions in the world such as the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games.

Participants compete in their age group needing no qualifying standards or times to enter. The only criterion for entry is a minimum age for each sport, which for the majority is 30 years.
